There are 155 accredited M.D. granting schools in the United States, colloquially known as Allopathic Schools. These schools are highly competitive for students admissions. There were 21,869 matriculants to medical school out of 53,371 applicants (≈41%) in 2019. Allopathic Schools are to be distinguished from Osteopathic Schools (DO) and Podiatric Schools (DPM).
